When dentists work with patients, they take the time to educate them on proper oral health habits and the benefits of good oral hygiene. Drs. Mike and Marisa Milligan of Eastland Dental Center in Bloomington, IL provide safe and effective treatment options for conditions that may arise. This includes cavities and gum disease. Patients who develop gum disease need to learn about the ways to address their condition and bring their smile back to health.
First, it is essential that patients understand what gum disease is. Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is an infection that can impact the oral health of a patient and cause irreversible damage to the teeth, bones, and gum tissue. Good oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings with check ups are essential in preventing or maintaining oral health. Periodontal disease can have a major impact on a body’s overall health. Periodontal disease and inflammation in the mouth left untreated can cause an increased risk for diabetes, heart attack and stroke.
The most noticeable signs of gum disease include the following:
The first step in taking care of the mouth when periodontal disease has formed is to get an accurate diagnosis. Addressing gum disease needs to be done as soon as possible to reduce the amount of damage the condition can cause. Patients visit the dentist, explain their concerns, and undergo a routine examination. It will include examining the teeth and gums and taking a series of x-rays to look at the health of the bone underneath. Measurements are also taken of the gums and bone support. In some cases we must complete an OralDNA test to know the specific bacteria causing the condition. We can then target them with antibiotics or other treatments to resolve the condition. Our professionals will then let patients know if periodontal disease is present and what stage it has reached. The later stages are more damaging than the earlier stages.
Once a diagnosis has been made and the patient is aware of what stage their condition has reached, Drs. Mike and Marisa Milligan then discuss possible treatment options. Treatment of gum disease will vary from patient to patient. The earlier stage of gum disease known as gingivitis is the easiest to treat. Most patients benefit from a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums. However, if the infection is more advanced, further treatments may be required. Scaling and root planing are common ways to achieve results. This treatment requires cleaning of the teeth and gums, including the roots below the gumline. Patients who have periodontal disease that has reached a more advanced stage may require antibiotic treatment or adding bone where it has been lost. Drs. Mike and Marisa Milligan can speak to patients about what the best course of treatment is to treat and control any stage of periodontal disease.
Patients who have gum disease at any stage are encouraged to visit Eastland Dental Center to undergo specific procedures to address the infection and reduce the amount of damage that occurs to their smile. Drs. Mike and Marisa Milligan are committed to ensuring patients have access to the treatments they need to achieve the smile of their dreams, and address conditions such as periodontal disease, which may be wreaking havoc on the smile and a person’s overall health.
