Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection that starts in the gum tissues and spreads. Drs. Mike Milligan and Marisa Milligan of Bloomington, IL are committed to educating their patients further on the harmful effects of gum disease and learn how it can dramatically affect the health and appearance of their smile if not diagnosed and treated early.
At Eastland Dental Center, we start with education. When patients have knowledge about oral health conditions, they can take the necessary steps to lower their risks. This includes brushing, flossing, and maintaining regular dental appointments with Drs. Mike Milligan and Marisa Milligan. When patients fail to do this, they may increase their chances of developing periodontal disease. Periodontal disease cannot be cured, but it can be controlled with the assistance of a quality dental team.
Gum infection causes bleeding when patients brush and floss their teeth. The gum tissue may appear red and swollen, and patients may notice they are struggling with bad breath. These are often indications of the first stage of periodontal disease known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is typically addressed with a thorough cleaning at the dental office and improved oral hygiene habits.
If left untreated, gingivitis can become severe and develop into periodontitis, the later stage of periodontal disease. At this point, the gums may begin to pull away from the teeth, the jawbone may begin to shrink, and teeth can become loose to the point where they fall out. This is a serious, irreversible issue, so patients need to ensure they catch problems early and seek professional intervention.
Patients in and around the Bloomington, IL area who want to find out the steps they can take to protect their smiles can schedule an appointment with the team at Eastland Dental Center today.
