Having a healthy smile is important for maintaining the appearance and the longevity of the teeth and gums. When gum disease occurs, it is important for patients to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. Drs. Mike and Marisa Milligan of Eastland Dental Center in Bloomington, Illinois encourage patients to visit regularly to catch these issues early enough for proper intervention.
When patients come into our practice and say, “I have gum disease,” we encourage them to undergo an initial diagnosis to determine if this is true and if so, at what stage the condition has reached. There are many different stages and each one has its own special treatment options. For example, the earlier stage, known as gingivitis, benefits most from a professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene practices at home. However, the later stages, known as periodontitis, require treatments such as scaling and root planing. Depending on the severity of the infection, some patients may benefit from taking antibiotics or having the antibiotics applied directly onto the gum tissue to fight the disease at the source. At the initial evaluation and consultation appointment the stage of the patient’s gum disease is determined, a dental professional discusses effective treatment options, and a treatment plan is put in place on how to move forward to a healthier smile.
If you’re thinking, “I have gum disease,” visiting the dentist as soon as possible is definitely required. By visiting a dental professional, patients can get a proper diagnosis and discuss effective treatment options to get their smile back to health. At Eastland Dental Center, we assist Bloomington area residents with their dental health needs.
