Bloomington area dentist describes the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea

What is obstructive sleep apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea, sometimes referred to as OSA, is a sleeping disorder caused by a blocked airway. This results in patients waking up at night, sometimes hundreds of times, and keeps them from getting the restorative sleep they require to function their best the following day. Over time, this can cause a number of symptoms that patients need to watch for, including:
- Dry mouth and headache upon waking
- Insomnia
- Daytime fatigue
- Poor memory and concentration
- Increased depression or anxiety
Diagnosis and treatment
When patients notice the symptoms above, it is essential that they speak to a professional for a proper diagnosis. With a diagnosis from a medical doctor, patients can then work with a professional to treat their condition and improve their overall quality of life. A sleep study allows a doctor to monitor what is going on while patients sleep and ensure obstructive sleep apnea is the cause of their issues. Many doctors will suggest CPAP therapy. This is the use of a special device that is worn with a mask to help prevent the airway from collapsing. However, patients are known for not complying with treatment because the device is uncomfortable and difficult to sleep with. Eastland Dental Center is owned and operated by the father-daughter duo, Dr. Mike Milligan and Dr. Marisa Milligan.
Dr. Mike completed his doctor of dental medicine degree from Southern Illinois University in 1978. Dr. Marisa completed her doctor of dental medicine degree from Midwestern University in 2015. Both doctors have logged hundreds of hours of continuing education to stay on top of the latest technologies in dentistry as well as the most current research on the oral-systemic, mouth-body connection to benefit their patients. Dr. Mike and Dr. Marisa are active members and in excellent standing with the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Association, Chicago Dental Society, McLean County Dental Association, American Academy of Oral Systemic Health, and numerous other societies.
Both doctors are avid golfers and have won several national golf tournaments over the years. They are the only father-daughter team in the state to have won the Illinois State Amateur Golf Championship. Dr. Mike in 1974 and Dr. Marisa in 2005.
