The importance of seeking emergency dentistry in our office for tooth pain

Tooth pain is, contrary to popular belief, one of the most common reasons people seek emergency dental care. When we think of what we would consider a dental emergency, we may list traumatic injuries such as a tooth being knocked out or broken. In reality, this type of scenario is rare. Tooth pain, on the other hand, may not be readily identified as a situation that should be addressed in emergency dentistry. In our office near Normal, Illinois, we encourage patients to contact us rather than attempt to handle tooth pain on their own.

It is understandable that people prefer to avoid seeing the dentist. Drs. Mike and Marisa Milligan and the team at Eastland Dental Center offer calm, compassionate care that optimizes oral health. Our goal is to provide our patients with the gentle preventive, restorative, and cosmetic care they need and to get to know them in the process. We want you to feel completely comfortable when you visit our practice, from the time you check in to the completion of treatment. With this level of care, we hope to create ease within our patients so that they do not avoid regular dental visits that could prevent emergencies.

Tooth pain may occur for several reasons. One thing is certain; tooth pain is a sign of a problem somewhere. Were you to look online for home remedies for tooth pain, you would certainly find solutions to pain. This does not equate to finding a solution to the underlying problem, and this is where the danger of home remedies becomes very real.

Eliminating pain with compresses or over-the-counter medication can improve comfort, but only temporarily. If the underlying problem is not quickly diagnosed and treated by your experienced dentist, the pain will most certainly return. Tooth pain often stems from a cavity. If pain from a cavity is continually treated with home remedies, the cavity does not go away. Instead, it continues to grow, and each time, the pain from damage will be worse.

More important than the pain is the damage that is being done to the tooth and surrounding structures. When tooth pain is not treated, an abscess may occur. Abscess is an infection deep within a tooth. This infection can spread to gum tissues and surrounding teeth, ultimately causing extensive damage.

A visit to your dentist for emergency care is a far better solution to tooth pain than any home remedy. Contact Eastland Dental Center if you are experiencing a toothache or want to avoid the pain of a toothache with preventive dental care.
