Bloomington patients restore their smiles with versatile dental crowns

When most people think about their teeth, they may think about the aesthetic appeal and appearance of their smiles. However, a tooth that has been weakened from decay, damage, trauma, or breakage, will impair optimal oral function and comfort. Dental crowns, which are also called caps, encase the tooth that is visible above the gum line. When cemented in place, the crown looks and feels like a natural, healthy tooth. A dental crown is a highly-versatile restorative and cosmetic treatment that can solve many problems, such as:

  • Broken, cracked, excessively worn, or otherwise damaged teeth
  • Large, unsightly fillings that take over the majority of the teeth
  • Teeth that are oddly-shaped
  • Extreme discoloration
  • Uneven or unattractive teeth

Dental crowns also serve a significant function in combination with other restorations, including covering and protecting a dental implant or securing a dental bridge in place.

Crowns are made from a variety of materials, such as gold, zirconium, or other alloy metals for porcelain fused to metal, all-porcelain, all-resin, or all ceramic.

At Eastland Dental Center, serving patients from Bloomington, Normal, and surrounding IL communities, Dr. Mike Milligan and his colleague and daughter, Dr. Marisa Milligan, are attentive and experienced Doctors of Medical Dentistry (DMD).

Treatment with a dental crown may involve several steps, such as:

  • Comprehensive consultation with one of our doctors will determine if a patient is an appropriate candidate for a dental crown
  • Digital images may be taken to evaluate the root of the tooth and the jawbone
  • If tooth decay or infection or injury to the pulp is detected, a root canal treatment may be required
  • The tooth is scaled down on the sides and the chewing surface to allow room for the crown
  • If a large portion of the tooth is missing or broken off, a filling material may be used to build it up
  • Impressions of the tooth will be taken and sent to our professional dental laboratory
  • A temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth
  • In a second visit the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent restoration will be placed, tested for fit and color, and cemented securely

Consultations and appointments may be requested online or by calling our friendly, professional team at.
