Dentist in Bloomington, IL describes the procedure for placement of dental crowns

When patients in the Bloomington, IL area need restorative dental care, they may not be aware of the many procedures that are done at Eastland Dental Center. Drs. Mike and Marisa Milligan are pleased to offer patients solutions that are best suited for their specific needs. In many cases, patients may ask about a procedure that can restore and even strengthen a natural tooth, such as the placement of a common option called a dental crown.

What is a dental crown?

Patients who visit the team at Eastland Dental Center in need of restorative care will be evaluated and all treatment options presented. When damage happens to a natural tooth, it can greatly impact the overall health of the smile. It can also impact the function of the tooth and put patients at risk for disease and infection. When a tooth has been injured, it is best to work with our dental team to determine if a restoration such as dental crown would be beneficial.

A dental crown is a ceramic restoration that a dentist can use to cover the visible portion of a tooth to add an extra layer of strength and protection. This restoration sometimes referred to by patients as a dental “cap,” is commonly made from materials like porcelain, zirconia, or lithium disilicates. These materials closely mimic the appearance of natural tooth enamel and function just like your natural tooth.  These materials have been shown to be extremely strong and durable for longevity. Most patients who have dental crowns will enjoy their restorations for many years with proper care. Dental crowns are fabricated to match the patient’s existing teeth in color, shape, and size, so they blend in seamlessly with the smile and are not noticeable by others. These restorations are extremely common and provide individuals a way to repair their smiles without looking as though they have had dental work completed.

What to expect for placement of a dental crown

The first appointment is a consultation visit, during which our professionals will evaluate the dentition which typically requires radiographs and will then provide recommendations to the patient. Each patients treatment plan is custom to their needs and what they are comfortable with. If a dental crown is determined to be the restorative treatment best for you, the entire process will take two appointments.  The first appointment involves preparing the tooth for a dental crown. The tooth will be anesthetized for the comfort of the patient. Then the tooth is made healthy by removing decay or strengthening an area of the fracture. The tooth is then shaped to make room for the crown. An impression of the tooth is taken which involves a gel-like material in a tray with you biting in place for 4-6 minutes. The impressions, or molds, are then sent to a dental laboratory with instructions regarding the final appearance of the restoration. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth until the final restoration returns from the dental laboratory. During the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown tried in. If all fits well and we are happy with the fit, function, and appearance the crown will be cemented into place.  Patients are educated on how to care for their new dental crown and are advised as to ways to extend its longevity. Just because a crown is covering a tooth does not mean it is not susceptible to problems such as periodontal disease and tooth decay. Patients are encouraged to maintain routine hygiene appointments at least every 6 months.
